Entryway - As our eyes adjust from the bright sunlight of the forecourt to the semi-dark entryway, we see a large electric
grandfather clock. Next to it is a beautiful tile table framed in wrought iron and designed by Inez Johnson Von Hake. This table is an excellent example of the cuerda seca
or “dry line” technique of glazing. A black line of manganese and oil was drawn on the tile by hand, then the glaze colors applied. The black line served to keep the
various glaze colors separate during the 1900 degree firing process.
The earthen colored walls and the blue ceiling of the entry hall are symbolic of earth and sky in this architectural form.On the
floor is a Persian style “rug” complete with fringed ends designed into the tiles. William Handley of Malibu Potteries designed these tiles which are fine examples of
ceramic art in the house.
The large arched French windows opening to the east onto the main patio are protected by a decorative wrought iron grille with a
grapevine, “tree of life” motif. The loggia’s elaborately painted, undulating ceiling continues outside to form the under surface of the upstairs balcony, but years of
exposure have faded the exterior paint.
