EXTERIOR - To appreciate the lines and balance of the Adamson House, view it from the center of the lawn past the Star Fountain. Note the harmony of color and form from this perspective. Enjoy the fountain with its myriad tiles and brilliant colors. The pool was a saltwater pool and the pool house had bilateral symmetry with one side for men and one for women. An elevated barbecue area is dominated by an imposing classical concrete bench, matched by a similar bench at the east end of the pool house. Across the paved area from the house is the Neptune Fountain with its gargoyle-like head. The steps to the left of the fountain lead up to the small one-room structure that was built for Merritt Adamson Jr., as a study room and hobby shop. Across from the front lawn are steps that lead toward the lagoon and down to the boathouse.

The wall that separates the property from the outside world runs for more than a thousand feet parallel to Pacific Coast Highway. It is interspersed randomly with Malibu tile and natural stone inserts. Mrs. Adamson had dirt piled along the top of this wall so that it would run down the side during rains and help to give it an aged appearance. An extensive rose garden flourishes just outside the forecourt despite frequent visits by deer. Just  below it,  is a pleasant croquet lawn and picnic area shaded by a giant sycamore. Looking across the lagoon at a number of luxurious homes on the beach, the visitor views the east end of the Malibu Movie Colony, inhabited now and over the past 75 years by some of the most famous persons in the entertainment world.
